Explore the Map: What Gets Remembered?

This map depicts some sites of commonly-commemorated themes in the Southern United States, including the Confederacy, the Civil Rights Movement and national figures such as U.S. presidents. Public K-12 schools, our streets and roads, and public markers all signify and commemorate these events and people. Toggle on and off various layers to see which narratives are memorialized most strongly in various locations and forms. You can also view in full screen.
